What is a Expanded Form
Expanded form number in math is a way to rewrite a number that breaks up that value into separate digits, showing how much each digit actually represents in the process.
For example 9753 = 9 × 1000 + 7 × 100 + 5 × 10 + 3 × 1 because there are 9 thousand, 7 hundreds, 5 tens, and 3 ones.
There are several ways to write numbers using expanded form.
Expanded Form Examples
1. Write number 9753 in expanded form.
Standard Form:
9,753
Expanded Form:
9,000 + 700 + 50 + 3 = 9,753
Expanded Factors Form:
(9 × 1,000) + (7 × 100) + (5 × 10) + (3 × 1) = 9,753
Expanded Exponential Form:
(9 × 103) + (7 × 102) + (5 × 101) + (3 × 100) = 9,753
Decimal Expanded Form
2. Write decimal number 127.53 in expanded form.
Standard Form:
127.53
Expanded Form:
100 + 20 + 7 + 0.5 + 0.03 = 127.53
Expanded Factors Form:
(1 × 100) + (2 × 10) + (7 × 1) + (5 × 0.1) + (3 × 0.01) = 127.53
Expanded Exponential Form:
(1 × 102) + (2 × 101) + (7 × 100) + (5 × 10-1) + (3 × 10-2) = 127.53
