What is golden ratio?

Two quantities are in the golden ratio if their ratio is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger of the two quantities.

The value of the golden ratio is approximately 1.618. The golden ratio is usually denoted by the letter φ (phi).

{\varphi = \dfrac{1 + \sqrt{5}}{2}≈ 1.618}

Let’s look at an example.

Golden ratio

If (a+b) / a = a / b ≈ 1.618, then a and b are in the golden ratio.
